Behind the Stone

April 2007

“They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’” – Mark 16:3

They might rest easy now.
The troublemaker was finally gone.
Buried behind the stone.
A great stone.

Oh, there was still work to be done.
There always is.
Pilate still had to control the restless Jews.
The soldiers still had to keep order.
The chief priest had to mend the curtain of the temple.
The Pharisees and the scribes
kept up their thankless task of
trying to teach a wandering people.

The Sabbath had to be kept.
The Law had to be read.
The temple sacrifices had to be made.
Caesar’s taxes had to be paid.

But the Passover was ending.
Life returned to normal.

It’s better this way.
Some things need to be covered.
Behind the stone he’ll soon be forgotten.
His disciples will return to Galilee.
No one will remember.
Like Theudas and Judas the Galilean
It will all pass away.

After all
only God himself
could remove that stone.
