      <title>Jesus the Wrong Messiah</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Jesus is preparing the disciples for the coming drama of his death and resurrection.  This is not the first time he has spoken of this.  He has told them several times with the admonition, “Let these words sink into your ears” (Luke 9:44).  The disciples understand nothing.  The meaning of Jesus’ words remain hidden from them.  How can this be?  One crucial reason is that the disciples were expecting a very different Messiah.  They were looking for someone like Moses or David, a powerful leader who would defeat Israel’s enemies.  Jesus fulfils a prophetic pattern that includes Moses and David as his antecedents.  Unlike them, however, his victory is achieved through suffering.  This is no less difficult for us to grasp than it was for the disciples.   Yet Jesus, the suffering servant, is our greatest hope and confidence.]]></description>
