Sermon Text: Matthew 8:18-27
Sermon Theme
In Matthew and the gospels we see Jesus lowering the bar for those on the fringe of society. He cares for the sick, the weak, and the gentiles. He has compassion on those who are suffering, heals those who are hurting, and responds to those who cry out to him with raw needs and gut-wrenching faith.
But for those who would be his disciples, Jesus raises the bar. The price of entry to knowing and walking with Jesus is high. He expresses zero tolerance for the guy who has a rosy picture of what it would be to “go with him anywhere.” He denounces also the man still devoted to his previous life. He demands great faith and trust.
Questions for Us
How can there be such a discrepancy in the way Jesus receives people? Doesn’t Jesus love us all the same? What does Jesus know that he must send away the would-be disciples? Who are the few that are able to break through the barrier?
