Sermon Text: Genesis 2:18-22, James 1:22-25
Sermon Theme
The main idea from the scripture in Genesis 2 that I want to emphasize can be found in verse 18 when God says, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper as his partner.” This is similar to what the book of John chapter 14 talks about when Jesus foretells is his ascent into heaven; he says to his disciples that he will not leave them alone, instead Jesus promises send the “Advocate” or the “Helper,” who is the Holy Spirit, to be with humanity forever. The term “helper” is the key word in both pieces of scripture. The point is that we humans were not designed to walk alone through this life. From the beginning, Adam needed Eve, and through the Holy Spirit we are intended to have personal interactions with God. We are creatures designed to have relationships with others.
As we read this morning’s second scripture and then continue on into the sermon, I invite you to think about the relationships you have in your everyday life. With whom do you have regular relationships? What kind of relationships are they? Are they relationships of necessity because you work with or go to school with the people? Are they optional relationships because you enjoy certain people’s company? Consider your relationships as we continue this morning’s worship.
